News: Christian ‘Chucho’ Benitez passed away

Former Birmingham City striker Christian Benitez also known as ‘Chucho’ has passed away today at the age of 27 years old, no cause of death has been announced but it has been rumoured that he was involved in an accident.

Benitez was currently playing in Qatar for El Jaish after joining them this summer on a 3 year deal worth £10mil that saw him depart Club America in Mexico. The newly signed player had also been a transfer target of Tottenham according to Sky Sports.

There was an announcement on El Jaish’s website confirming the death of the play just a day after Benitez had made his debut for the club but they gave no details on how he died. The club statement read:

“Benitez had recently joined the club from Club America for three seasons. The player participated for the first time with the team during Sunday’s match against Qatar Sports Club in the Sheikh Jassem Cup without complaining of any health problems.

“His sudden departure is a big shock for each member of the technical and administrative staff. He was a player that over the short period he was here was regarded for his high moral character.”

Benitez played for Birmingham City in 2009 when he joined on loan but the Ecuadorian failed to secure a permanent move and returned to Santos Laguna and scored a total of 59 goals in 74 games.

Birmingham City have also released a statement expressing how saddened they are by the death.

“The thoughts of all associated with the football club are with Chucho’s family and friends at this very sad time. Chucho’s passing will now be marked at St Andrew’s ahead of Saturday’s fixture against Watford.

“The Ecuador international was an immensely-popular character during his time at the football club.”
