Newcastle United had a fantastic season last year in the Premiership. They finished 5th in the league and they totally earned that by playing some fantastic football throughout the year. Their team was very strong and players like Cabaye, Ben Arfa, Coloccini, Cisse and Ba were all transfer targets for clubs in the summer. Despite hanging on to all of these players Pardew’s team have looked a shadow of what they were last season.
This season has been a hard one for all clubs I think, even some of the ones at the top have struggled at times. There has been a distinct improvement from the clubs that sat near Newcastle in the league this year and I think this has made it harder for the team to keep up. Consistency is the key to continuing the good form and for many reasons the Magpies haven’t been able to maintain form.
I think Newcastle’s biggest problem has been injuries, they have had some key players out for long periods and they have also had a long injury list for most of the season. Missing players such as Cabaye, Ben Arfa, Simpson, Taylor at points this season has definitely been a contributing factor and it has cost them valuable points. As well as injuries there have been a few players that haven’t quite continued their good form from last year.
This transfer window has been an important one for Pardew and I think he has made the necessary signings that will help Newcastle improve. He has brought mostly defensive players due to that being the area in which Newcastle are most lacking. Also selling Ba to Chelsea meant that he had to swicth the team around a bit.
Mathieu Debuchy has been a transfer target for while and I’m not surprised that Pardew snapped up the French right back. He will definitely strengthen up the back 4, something Newcastle really needed.
Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa is a central defender but can be used in a variety of defensive positions including DM and he is a very strong player and fast.
Massadio Haidara is a left-back, another addition to the Newcastle defence.
Moussa Sissoko is an attacking midfielder but he play in any role across the midfield. He is generally compared to Vieira’s style of play which is strong, fast and tackling. I think he will play well with Cabaye and Cisse as he suits their style of play.
Yoan Gouffran is a striker and will be replacing Demba Ba on the frontline for Newcastle. I think this is a great signing for Newcastle. Gouffran is a two-footed striker with impeccable finish.
I think with the players that Pardew has signed during the transfer window and the return of a few others in due course I think Newcastle will pick up form, it’s just whether he has done enough? What do you think fans?
