The Pitch is Back Weekly Preview- Week 7

Well last weekend was an odd weekend of results in football but there were some great games to watch. My predictions were awful, I only predicted two results right from last week’s football. I am hoping for a better set of predictions this week. I dropped some valuable points in my prediction league with my friends and I need to make them up.  There are potentially some great fixtures over the weekend, Man City v Sunderland, Arsenal v West Ham and Man United v Newcastle, the latter game is going to be my choice for game of the weekend

Manchester City v Sunderland

Manchester City drew against Dortmund during the week after an outstanding performance by Joe Hart who literally saved the game. They are unbeaten in 32 games and Sunderland will be looking to change that. Sunderland have started the season unbeaten and its the best start they have had since 1954. Sunderland came away with 4 points from two games against the blues last season so they will be aiming to win this game. City are near the top and maintaining form despite a few defensive issues.

Injury news

Man City- Garcia (thigh) and Toure are facing late fitness tests. Maicon (heel) and Richards (ankle)

Sunderland- No fresh injury concerns

Players to watch- Carlos Tevez, Steven Fletcher

Prediction- Away win

Chelsea v Norwich City

Chelsea had a fantastic midweek game against Nordsjaelland winning 4-0 which adds to the great start they have made in the Premier League. They have not lost a game so far this season and they will want to keep that form. Norwich are suffering their worst start ever to a Premier League campaign. They are struggling to get a result to go their way. The Canaries will be desperate for a win but I think the blues have this game in the bag

Injury News

Chelsea- No fresh injuries

Norwich- Simon Lappin (Ankle Ligaments) and Steve Whittaker are both out.

Players to watch- Fernando Torres, Grant Holt

Prediction- Home win

Swansea v Reading

Swansea have had a couple of dodgy games the last few weeks which has led to them dropping points after a great start. Reading are still looking for that first win of the season which will hopefully move them further up the table. If Swansea lose this game it will be the most they have lost consecutively in the Premiership. Reading have lost 4 of the last 6 games played against Swansea. Swansea have been off-form but Reading looked improved last weekend.

Injury News- no fresh injuries for either club. Roberts makes a return for Swansea

Players to watch- Michu, Karacan

Prediction- Home win

West Bromwich Albion v Queens Park Rangers

West Brom seem to be handling life well under new boss Clarke and are off to their best Premier League start with 11 points from 6 games. Qpr have just 2 points from 6 games which is their worst ever start. It’s been a tricky start for the London club and their away record is rocky. Qpr are yet to win a game this season and with West Brom being on great form I think they will find it hard to get the result this week.

Injury news-

West Brom- Billy Jones (knee), Chris Brunt (hamstring), Steven Reid (hamstring)

QPR- Anton Ferdinand, Fabio and Bosingwa (hamstring), Traore (leg)

Diakite suspended

Players to watch- Peter Odemwingie, El Taraabt

Prediction- Home Win

Wigan Athletic v Everton

Wigan are off to their worst start ever after 4 points from 6 games. They are suffering a bit without Moses in my opinion, he was a vital part of their team. Everton on the other hand are having a dream start to their season, 2nd in the league with 13 points. They have been brilliant to watch so far. I think this will probably be a very one-sided game if Wigan have not improved from the last few weeks.

Injury news-

Wigan have Gomes back in the squad after his red card ban was lifted during the week by the FA. Fyvie (ankle)

Everton- Naismith will have a late fitness test, no fresh injuries

Players to watch-Shaun Maloney, Steven Pienaar

Prediction- Away Win

West Ham v Arsenal

West Ham are soaring above their newly promoted friends in the league so far this season. It’s best a great start for them. Arsenal had a good result during the week despite some defensive issues and they have played so much better this season. Arsenal have won 6 and drew 2 in the last 8 meetings against the hammers. West Ham have only lost 1 out of their last 16 games at Upton Park. This is the 2nd London derby in Arsenal’s run of 4 and this is set to be a great game.

Injury News-

Arsenal-Wenger refuses to rush Wilshere back. Diaby (thigh)

West Ham-Joey O’ Brien (hamstring) Andy Carroll to face late fitness test.

Players to watch- Ricardo Vaz Te, Gervinho

Prediction- Away Win

Southampton v Fulham

Not a great start so far for Southampton. They have conceded the most goals so far this season and have given away the lead in a few games. Fulham have continued their general great home form but still struggle on the away wins. Neither team have had a draw so far this season and both teams have scored plenty of goals so this game could be a thriller to watch.

Injury News-

Southampton-No fresh injuries

Fulham- Dimitar Berbatov(thigh). Kerim Frei, Philippe Senderos and Simon Davies are all fit again.

Players to watch-Adam Lellana, Mladen Petric

Prediction- Draw

Liverpool v Stoke

Liverpool’s season is up and down like a yo-yo at the moment, from bad to a glimmer of good and then bad again. They lost Thursday night at home to Udinese after a very sloppy defensive performance. Stoke have had a similar start to Liverpool, both teams only recorded their first win of the season last week. Stoke have not won a game at Anfield in the Premier league in 49 games. This game does have a tendency to be a draw normally.

Injury News-

Liverpool-Jay spearing faces a late fitness test. Lucas (knee)

Stoke- late fitness tests on Wilkinson, Woodgate, Wilson and Shotton

Players to Watch- Steven Gerrard, Ryan Shawcross

Prediction- Draw

Tottenham v Aston Villa

Tottenham will be buoyed this week by their win at Old Trafford last week. Spurs played really well to get that win and it was deserved. The drew on Thursday night in the Europa league game. Aston Villa had a rocky start to the season but Lambert finally seems to be getting them back on track and they are looking stronger. In the last 2 meetings at Villa Park Tottenham have had a player sent off, but have lost none of the last 7 games against them and I don’t think that will change this weekend.

Injury News-

Tottenham- no new injuries

Aston Villa- No new injuries

Players to watch- Gareth Bale, Barry Bannan

Prediction- Home Win

Newcastle v Manchester United

Newcastle had a great Thursday night game beating Bordeaux 3-0, especially as Bordeaux had been unbeaten in 21 games. Man United look so weak defensively at the moment. This is the most goals they have conceded in the opening six games since 2001/02 season. Demba Ba scored in both games against United last season and Rooney has scored a total of 10 goals against them. This is definitely going to be a great game to watch.

Injury News-

Newcastle- Ben Arfa could feature this weekend. No fresh injuries.

Manchester United- no new injuries but remain without Vidic, Jones, Young, Valencia and Smalling.

Players to watch- Hatem Ben Arfa if he makes the team, if not Papiss Cisse, Robin Van Persie

Prediction- Home win

Hope you all have a great weekend 🙂
