The Pitch is Back Weekend Report

The first weekend of the football season was an exciting one wasn’t it.  Some shocking results and great game were produced and it was full of plenty of drama and even a funny moment.

I watched a few games over the weekend and these are the match reports for them.

Arsenal v Sunderland- The Arsenal team minus Van Persie were the focus of  fan’s  eyes on Saturday and they failed to impress us.  Sunderland came to the Emirates with defending in mind and that’s exactly what they did and they done it well. Arsenal had some great opportunities despite not scoring. Cazorla and Giroud look promising and despite not having the best game and Podolski will come good. Arsenal still need a bit of improvement but defensively the have improved.  Sunderland looked good.

Tottenham v Newcastle- This was always going to be a difficult opener for both teams who finished just points away from each other but both teams came out starting well. Tottenham definitely dominated a lot of this game. Especially in the first half but in the 2nd half Newcastle were the stronger team for sure. Demba Ba scored a beautiful goal in the 55th minute and that broke the deadlock between the two teams and the game got more attacking. Spurs scored on the 76th minute after Defoe scored on a rebound from his original attempt. The last goal was a penalty in the 80th minute after Ben Arfa was tripped by Defoe.

Chelsea v Wigan- This was another great game to watch.  The players that Chelsea have brought this year will definitely be great assets to the team.  Hazard ran around that pitch like he had been there for a long time and knew where and who to pass to. He was also involved in both goals Even though Wigan matched Chelsea for shots and possession for majority of the game they just didn’t have the goals to show. Great start for both teams in terms of performance though.

Everton v Manchester United- All eyes were on Goodison Park on Monday night as everyone wondered whether Van Persie could make an appearance; However it was Marouane Fellaini that stole the show with a bullet of a header that won Everton the game. Despite Man U having chances and completing more passes but a long shot; it was Everton that had the better game. Van Persie came on in the 68th minute but failed to impress on his debut looking lost on the pitch. This will probably change soon though.

Game of the week: This has to be the Man City v Southampton game.  The 5 goal game was the best of the weekend.  Southampton made a fantastic impression on their opening day in the Premier league regardless of the result.  They planned really well against the Champions and they were unlucky to have lost.  Manchester City played well too though, very counter attacking game to watch.

First goal of the season came from Michu. The debut player scored for Swansea in the 8th minute in the 5 goal win over QPR.

First red card of the season: Daniel Agger

Funny moment of the week has to be Alan Pardew pushing the 4th official on the sideline and getting sent off for it.

Goal of the week: Demba Ba
