So…Yesterday was exciting wasn’t it. I absolutely enjoyed every nerve-wracking last minute of the season finale day. It makes me pity those who don’t have football in their lives because they did not get to feel what every fan felt yesterday, especially those that had something to play for. I watched it all unfold with a Man United and Chelsea supporter and we all agreed that it was a cracking last day. In all the years of watching and supporting football (22 years roughly) I have never enjoyed a final day as much as I did yesterday.
I am going to start at the bottom with the relegation zone. Bolton, QPR and Villa had everything to fight for yesterday as they tried desperately to remain in the premiership. Owen Coyle’s Bolton unfortunately lost that battle, even after a flukey M.Davies shot and a cracking K.Davies goal it just wasn’t enough to save them. Stoke equalised through a penalty after crouch was brought down and ended their premiership dreams. But all was not lost for Villa and Qpr who both remain in the Premiership for another season.
3rd place was being battled out by Arsenal, Spurs and Newcastle. The battle was won by Arsenal but I was so nervous throughout, especially when Spurs went up when Arsenal were losing. I was watching the Arsenal game online and I was on the edge of my seat for most of it, in fact I got accused of shouting too loud over the united game. After taking the lead and then going 2-1 down to win 3-2 was such a relief. Spurs beat Fulham 2-0 and they have ended up in 4th place which is still a great achievement for them. Newcastle lost to Everton enabling them to qualify for the Europa league.
…Finally the moment we have all been talking about since 5pm yesterday and that is Man City winning the Barclay’s premiership title. What a great finale to their game. How ironic that Man city won the league in Fergie time. Both games were a must win and for most of the 2nd half it actually looked like Man United were going to calmly waltz away with the this trophy, even at the final whistle of their game but in injury time, Man city went and equalised and then Aguero-city’s star player by far this season put them in front with that all important league winning goal. What a great ending it was.
As an Arsenal fan, I didn’t particularly want to see either Fergie or Na$ri happy and I had said a few times over the last few months that better the devil(s) you know than the ones you don’t but actually it was such an exciting end that I didn’t care who won it. I think the fact that Man City did will keep the rest of the Premiership on their toes next year and I’m not entirely sure anyone from the clubs below Man City will be wanting them to win it a 2nd year on the trot. It makes way for an exciting 12/13 season.
So it’s that time where the season ends and we have a whole 3 months without the premiership but it is not so bad this year as we pretty much have a whole summer of football. We have the Euro’s which it may get exciting for England but I’m not holding my breath but I love the fact that there will probably be a football game on almost everyday. I think Team GB is filling me with more excitement, I think they will do really well in the olympics. The transfer window is always somehow exciting as well, especially at the end.
So farewell 2011/2012 season, its been a great one- Bring on 2012/2013
